Loans for South Africans with bad credit

A bumpy credit profile doesn't automatically rule you out. Some registered credit providers specialise in applicants with limited or damaged credit history — but the terms will usually be tighter, and there are things to be careful of.

What 'bad credit' means here

In South Africa, 'bad credit' usually means a lower credit score at one or more of the credit bureaus (TransUnion, Experian, XDS, Compuscan), missed payments in the last few years, an active judgment, or being under debt review.

What might still be possible

  • Smaller, shorter-term loans while you rebuild
  • Loans priced at higher interest rates (still capped by the NCA)
  • Enquiries with credit providers who look beyond the bureau score

Being under active debt review is different — most credit providers can't legally issue you new credit while you're under review, and the debt counsellor manages your finances.

What to avoid

  • Anyone promising 'guaranteed approval regardless of credit'. That's a red flag.
  • Upfront fees demanded before any loan pays out
  • Unregistered lenders (loan sharks). Only borrow from providers registered with the NCR.

How Lumo can help

Enquiring with us doesn't run a credit search on you. We check your profile against providers who may still be able to help — including those who work with weaker profiles — before you formally apply anywhere. See our guide on applying with existing debt for more.

See if there's a match for your profile

Answer a few quick questions and we'll show which of our registered credit providers may be a fit. It takes about two minutes and won't affect your credit score.

Lumo Loans is a loan enquiry and referral service. We are not a credit provider. Any loan is subject to the credit provider's own criteria and affordability assessment, in line with the National Credit Act.
