Cash loans in South Africa
'Cash loan' is a common phrase — it doesn't actually mean cash-in-hand. In practice, it's a small, unsecured loan paid straight into your bank account, usually to be repaid over a short term.
How cash loans work today
Registered South African credit providers don't hand out physical cash. When people search for a 'cash loan', they usually mean a small personal loan paid electronically into their bank account — often the same day, once approved.
Typical amounts
- Anywhere from R500 to around R8,000 for the smallest, shortest loans
- Larger personal loans (see our personal loans page) go up to about R350,000
Are payday loans the same thing?
They're related. A payday loan is a very short-term loan meant to be repaid on your next payday. All payday-style products in SA fall under the National Credit Act and are subject to the same interest and fee caps.
What to avoid
- Any 'cash loan' offer that skips affordability checks — that's a red flag
- Unregistered lenders (loan sharks). Always check that the provider is registered with the National Credit Regulator (NCR)
- Upfront fees demanded before any loan is paid out — legitimate credit providers deduct fees from the loan itself
