Before you apply for a loan, it's worth checking — honestly — where you stand. In South Africa, a few things drive whether a credit provider will approve you and how much they'll lend.
1. Your income vs your commitments
The single biggest factor. Credit providers must run an affordability assessment under the National Credit Act, comparing your income to your existing debt and living costs.
2. Your credit profile
Your history of paying back credit, held by TransUnion, Experian, XDS, and Compuscan. You're entitled to one free credit report a year from each — take advantage of it.
3. Your employment stability
Most credit providers want at least three months of employment or steady self-employment income.
4. Your paperwork readiness
- Valid SA ID
- Payslips or business bank statements
- Three months of primary bank account statements
